what is a birth chart?

your birth chart, also called a natal chart, is a picture of the sky from the place you were born, frozen at the minute you were born. nobody else born on a different day, time or city has the same one.

it has three parts: the planets (what part of you it is), the signs (how that part acts) and the houses (where in your life it shows up). put them together and you get things like "venus in scorpio in the seventh house", which is a lot more about you than "i'm a leo".

• your birth time: gives you your rising sign and your houses. the rising changes about every two hours, so the closer to the minute, the better.
• your birth city: needed for the rising and the houses too, because the sky looks different from different places.

do not try to read all of it at once. start with your big three: your sun, your moon and your rising. they say the most about you, and they explain why your horoscope never sounded like you.
